CARELOCAL volunteer visitors are matched with an older person living alone in their local area. Visits then continue weekly, on a one-to-one basis, in the older person"s home. Firm friendships are forged between the volunteers and the older people, with many volunteers visiting the same person for many years now. All volunteers are registered, screened and trained before embarking on any visiting.
CARELOCAL currently supports over 100 volunteer visitors, and as this number continues to grow, we are very heartened by the obvious goodwill that exists among younger people towards their older neighbours.
Respect for the dignity of the person is all-important, with acceptance of their way of life. Some people require more attention, for example those whosemobility isrestricted and involvement in life is impaired. With time, good relationships are formed and lasting friendships are developed.
A special thank you to the Community Foundation. Through their generosity, Care Local and our community collaborators in the Stoneybatter area, developed an Older Men’s Committee, focusing on the needs of older, isolated men. The Older Men’s Drop-in Centre resulted from the input and leadership of these men.
With the funding received from the Dublin Bus Community Programme, Care Local, in partnership with DIT and the Dockland Senior Forum, will produce a video focused on improving the attitudes between young and old.
